Chapter 7 War In The Asia-Pacific Region Two Kinds of threats dhat made war likely(IM SUCHA SLOW TYPER!!!) #01.Rise of Facist Japan #02. Failure of efforts to re-establish peace aft WWI Part I:
Part II:
Part I : Why was peace in Asia-Pacific region threatened? 1.Japan's Foreign Policy Aims between 1931 and 1941 -To build an Empire in the Asia-pacific Region Japan, a leading country in the region wanted an empire that could live up to it's status. Places called for expansion : Russia & China[army]; British Malaya, French Indochina & the East Dutch Indies[navy] -To Free Asians From Western Control Japan felt dhat: 01-they would have to lead the fight in endin western imperialism 02-it was their destiny to be leaders of asia Japan was the strongest military power in Asia. would have to wage war agaisnt colonial powers like britain, France the Netherlands to cr8 a 'Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere' NOTES: Jap called Asia Pacific region, 'Greater East Asia'(Australia, New Zealand, Malaya, Burma, Thailand, French Indochina, Dutch East Indies, China, Japan). Wanted em to be part of Japanese Empire. Some of em produces resources such as oil, tin, rubber which were important for the resource-scarce Japan to be self-sufficient, to enable Japan to produce industrial goods and also, use these countries as markets for Jap goods. Used the word 'Co-prosperity' to get asians to believe all countries would benefit from this economic arrangement. -To find room for Japan's growing population Rapid population growth-farmers unable to grow enough food-govt imported food Needed more space-Japan mountanious country, not enough room to house peeps Hence, military suggested overseas expansion-would provide land for houses & crops -To Control Resources Economy badly affected by Great Depression-industries needed cheap suppliers of natural resources and arkets to sell goods Protectionism prevented japanese goods to be sold to other countries Thus, looked to MANCHURIA as solution. Manchuria could provide: 01-cheap manpower 02-raw materials: coal, timber, iron, soya beans, grain & gold 03-overseas market for japan's goods 2.Japan's Military Aggression -Growing influence in Manchuria and mainland China Jap gain control of Port Arthur & South Manchurian Railway aft defeating Russia(Russo-Japanese War) Gained special economic priviledges in Manchuria; ownership of land - built houses, factories, rights to develop mines and build railways. Seized control of Liaodong Peninsula(ex-german colony) Given control of Germany's overseas colonies in the Pacific(terms of TOV which ended WW1) 3.The military started acting without government permission -The Mukden Incident Part II :Why did World War II break out in the Asia-Pacific Region? 1.Japan's War Against China 2.The International Situation -Japan's Neutrality Agreement With the Soviet Union -War in Europe left European colonies in Asia undefended 3.Worsening relations between the USA and Japan -Japan saw USA as a threat to its plans to build an empire -US embargo on steel, scrap iron and oil -Breakdown of US-Japan talks in 1941 4.Hideki Tojo became Prime Minister -Japan orders attack on Pearl Harbour |
